Backroom Deals & Backward Priorities: Boyle Statement on House Republicans’ Dangerous Rules Changes, Debt Limit Dealings

Jan 6, 2023

WASHINGTONToday, Congressman Brendan Boyle (PA-02), incoming Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released a statement on House Republicans’ reported dealings on future must-pass debt limit legislation and harmful budgetary provisions included in House Republicans’ Rules package for the 118th Congress:

“As this country knows, one man’s ego is never worth the degradation of our Democracy or the safety of the American people,” said Boyle. “The reported reckless and irresponsible debt limit concessions made to buy off Extremist MAGA Republicans will put Americans’ livelihoods, our entire economy, and the global financial system at risk.

“Republicans’ Rules package makes it clear they are not interested in addressing the challenges facing families and workers,” Boyle continued. “Their hypocrisy is on full display—by reinstating CUTGO, Republicans are telling the American people their government can’t afford to invest in their well-being, all the while greasing the wheels for another round of deficit-ballooning tax cuts for the rich and well-connected.

“As chaos, confusion, and crisis continue to plague the nascent Republican majority, they will quickly discover these Rules changes are unworkable, especially in a caucus as divided as theirs. Meanwhile, House Democrats begin the 118th Congress united and ready to get to work on behalf of all Americans.”
