Boyle Calls Bullshit on Republican Budget Lies

April 2, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement in response to Senate Republicans releasing a budget resolution that misrepresents the cost of their tax plan and supports House Republican proposals to cut Medicaid:

“The use of so-called current policy baseline is just D.C. jargon for the single most irresponsible tax bill in American history.

Faced with the undeniable truth that giveaways to the ultra-wealthy do not pay for themselves, Senate Republicans are blatantly lying about the true cost of their bill. They are using a gimmick to pretend the permanent extension of their tax cut costs $0, when in reality we all know it costs trillions of dollars. This is bullshit.

This is the very same group that spent four years during President Biden’s administration pretending to care deeply about the deficit. Their hypocrisy is glaringly obvious.

To partially finance this massive giveaway to the ultra-rich, Senate Republicans have joined their House counterparts in greenlighting the largest proposed Medicaid cuts in American history. The Republican budget represents a shameless betrayal of the middle class.”

Background:

Republican Budget Plans Demand Historic Medicaid Cuts:

At Ranking Member Boyle’s request, the nonpartisan CBO has confirmed it is impossible for Republicans to meet their budget’s targets without the largest Medicaid cuts in US history. Over the next decade, after excluding Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and accounting for budget-neutral programs, only $135 billion is available for cuts. That is less than one-sixth of the $880 billion in cuts required by the Republican budget resolution. (More information available here. A one-pager is available here.)

CBO Analysis Confirms Republican Budget Will Explode the Debt:

Nonpartisan CBO analysis has repeatedly confirmed – even when requested by Republicans themselves – that Republican plans to extend tax giveaways to the ultra-wealthy would add trillions to the debt. Last month, CBO found that making their plans permanent would drive the national debt 47 percentage points higher as a share of GDP than under current law. The analysis also showed that if interest rates are higher than expected, Republican plans would drive the debt to over 250 percent of GDP by 2054. (More information available here.)
