Boyle Calls on Senate to Reject Russell Vought’s Reckless Nomination

February 3, 2025

WASHINGTON, DCCongressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after the Senate voted to proceed with the nomination of Russell Vought for Director of the Office of Management and Budget:

"Russell Vought may not be a household name but make no mistake—his nomination is as dangerous as it gets. His views aren’t just extreme; they are a direct threat to our democracy, the rule of law, and the basic principles of our government.

Vought continues to push the same debunked lie that the 2020 election was stolen—the very lie that fueled the January 6th attack on our nation. But that’s not all. He believes the President should be able to ignore Congress and control federal spending on his own. That kind of thinking isn’t just reckless—it’s unconstitutional.

Vought isn’t just another extremist voice. He helped write Project 2025, a far-right plan to tear down independent agencies, weaken democracy, and hand more power to the executive branch. He wants to strip away critical protections and push policies that serve a radical agenda, not the American people.

Someone like Vought has no business anywhere near government, let alone running the office in charge of the entire federal budget. OMB touches everything from Social Security and health care to national security and disaster relief. By confirming him, Senate Republicans wouldn’t just be giving him control over these critical programs—they’d also be handing more power to Vought and unelected billionaires like Elon Musk, who want to shape government to serve their own interests. Congress is supposed to have the power of the purse. If Republicans go along with this, they’ll be giving that power away.

His nomination should never have come this far, and Senate Republicans still have a chance to do the right thing. They need to show some backbone and vote NO."
