Boyle Statement on the 16th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act

March 23, 2026

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement marking the 16th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act being signed into law:

“For sixteen years, the Affordable Care Act has expanded coverage and lowered health care costs for millions of Americans. For just as long, Republicans have tried to dismantle the law without offering a serious alternative.

That assault has only intensified during President Trump’s second term. His so-called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ made the largest cuts to health care in American history to fund tax breaks for billionaires. Republicans' refusal to extend ACA tax credits is now driving up premiums and pushing millions of Americans off their coverage.

At the same time, the administration is spending billions on Trump’s costly war of choice in Iran—resources that could have been used to extend these tax credits and lower health care costs for millions of families.

I will never stop fighting to protect affordable health care and will continue leading the fight against Republicans’ ongoing assault on the ACA.”

Background:

  • Extending the ACA tax credits for one year—lowering costs and preserving coverage for millions of Americans—would have cost approximately $30 billion. By contrast, reports indicate that the Pentagon has requested roughly $200 billion from the White House to continue Trump’s reckless war in Iran.
  • A recent report from Ranking Member Boyle shows that personal bankruptcies are at their highest levels in years. Medical costs are one of the leading drivers of personal bankruptcies.
  • Republicans’ so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” cuts nearly $1 trillion from the health care system and, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, will strip coverage from 15 million Americans—all to fund tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations.
