Boyle Statement on April Jobs Report

May 5, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 253,000 in April:

“With another 253,000 jobs added in April, the question isn't whether our economic recovery remains on the right track, it's if House Republicans will throw it all away with their MAGA-manufactured default crisis.

“Under the leadership of President Biden and Congressional Democrats, our economy has gained a record 12.7 million jobs. But instead of protecting American jobs and building on this historic progress, House Republicans are threatening American families with an impossible choice: either accept our draconian cuts to education, public safety, veterans' care, and the lifeline programs working families depend on – or watch us crash the economy on purpose.

“It is unconscionable that, instead of doing everything possible to ensure the United States pays its bills on time, House Republicans are actually celebrating their job-killing Default on America Act and its devastating cuts. What's worse, if House Republicans do force our nation to default, they'll kill over 7 million jobs. It's time for Speaker McCarthy to stop holding our economy hostage, stop his dangerous default threats, and stop using Americans' livelihoods as a bargaining chip.”
