Boyle Statement Celebrating 50th Anniversary of the Congressional Budget Act
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974:
“Fifty years ago, Congress passed the Congressional Budget Act in response to President Nixon’s executive overreach and a budget process dominated by the executive branch. It created the Budget Committees, the Congressional Budget Office, and defended against illegal attempts by a President to withhold funds provided by Congress. The Constitution entrusts Congress with the power of the purse, and now fifty years later we must continue working to ensure that process delivers results for American families.”
“I’m proud my bill with Chairman Arrington, the CBO Data Sharing Act, passed the House unanimously and I hope to see it move through the Senate soon. This bill is the kind of commonsense reform to our budget process that all members of Congress can get behind, and I hope to see it passed into law soon. I will also keep fighting to reform the debt ceiling, which has been weaponized too many times with nearly catastrophic consequences. My bill, the Debt Ceiling Reform Act, would finally put an end to the toxic brinkmanship and manufactured default crises.”
“While I continue working to improve the process, I will never stop advocating for funding priorities that put American families first. Today, wages are up and more than 15 million jobs have been created under President Biden. We cannot afford a return to the era of corporate welfare and “trickle-down” tax scams for the ultra-wealthy: Democrats are fighting to invest in communities, child care, and the middle class, and we’re not backing down.”
