Boyle Statement on December Jobs Report

Jan 5, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 216,000 jobs in December:

“With a total of 2.7 million new jobs created, 2023 was a year that beat economic expectations by every metric,” said Ranking Member Boyle. “With the help of the Democratic investments made in 2021 and 2022, the recession some had predicted never materialized, inflation is down and nearing the Fed’s 2 percent target, and unemployment has been below 4 percent for 23 months in a row. Wages and consumer confidence are up, the economy is growing, and in 2024, President Biden and Democrats will keep working to lower costs and get working families more breathing room.”

“Although 2023 was a historic year for the Biden economy, it was also a historically dysfunctional and unproductive year for Congress under the control of House Republicans. We are now two weeks away from yet another Republican government shutdown which American families simply cannot afford. We already have a bipartisan budget agreement: it’s time for House Republicans to honor that deal, pass full-year government funding bills, and allow Congress to get back to work for the American people.”
