Boyle Statement on Democrats Once Again Averting Shutdown

November 14, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC —Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 6363, a continuing resolution which averts a costly government shutdown:

"Once again, House Republicans brought us to the brink of a shutdown and House Democrats provided the votes to keep our government open," said Ranking Member Boyle. "While this bill protects working families from the cruel budget cuts demanded by House Republicans, I am concerned that the so-called ‘laddered' expiration dates set up the possibility of two more MAGA shutdowns in the future. At the same time, Republicans are still too busy fighting each other to address pressing domestic concerns or provide desperately needed emergency assistance to our allies abroad."

"Let's be clear: We would not be here if House Republicans kept their word and honored the bipartisan budget agreement. The American people cannot afford House Republicans' extreme funding bills – which further their goals of making abortion illegal nationally, destroying public education, and making it easier for the wealthy to cheat on their taxes. With this latest crisis once again showing that House Republicans cannot govern without House Democrats, it's time for the House GOP to stop embracing the far-right and work with Democrats to deliver critical emergency assistance and enact bipartisan full-year funding bills."
