Boyle Statement on McCarthy Debt Ceiling Speech

February 6, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released a statement following House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's remarks on the debt ceiling:

"Let's be crystal clear: refusing to pay the bills is never fiscally responsible. Threatening to unleash economic catastrophe if you don't get what you want is never fiscally responsible. Sacrificing millions of American jobs and undermining our economic strength abroad is never fiscally responsible. Democrats have proven that we can govern and pass policies that lower costs for families, strengthen our economy, and cut the deficit in half — Republicans cannot say the same.

"The American people learned nothing new from Speaker McCarthy's speech tonight because Republicans have learned nothing. As long as Republicans choose reckless brinkmanship over responsible governance, our economy and Americans' livelihoods will remain in grave danger."
