Boyle Statement on Treasury’s Use of Extraordinary Measures to Avert Debt Ceiling Default
Budget Democrats Release New Explainer
WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement regarding the Treasury Department's announcement that "extraordinary measures" will be implemented to prevent a U.S. debt ceiling breach beginning Tuesday. He also unveiled a new explainer from the Democratic Staff of the House Budget Committee on the debt ceiling.
“With extraordinary measures starting Tuesday, the debt ceiling is officially a ticking time bomb. Democrats stand ready to work with Republicans to defuse it. But let’s be clear: We cannot allow Republicans to weaponize the debt ceiling and hold the economy hostage whenever it is politically convenient. It’s time to enact permanent reforms that end the GOP’s reckless brinkmanship, such as my Debt Ceiling Reform Act.
Furthermore, raising the debt ceiling cannot be used as a pretext to slash critical programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. During the Biden Administration, Republicans cynically exploited the debt ceiling to advance an agenda that would devastate essential programs for middle-class families. Now, with Trump back in the White House, they’re eager to raise the debt ceiling while pushing a deficit-busting $4.6 trillion tax cut that will overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest Americans and billion-dollar corporations. The hypocrisy is staggering.
Democrats must seize this moment to fight for middle class families. We’re here to stand up for them—not for billionaires or special interests.”
