HOUSE REPUBLICANS IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “Let’s shut it down.”

September 25, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement as House Republicans continue moving our nation closer to the brink of another damaging and unnecessary government shutdown:

"Despite their inevitable attempts to blame Democrats for their actions, their words have made the situation perfectly clear: extreme MAGA Republicans are itching for a costly government shutdown — no matter the consequences for the American people," said Ranking Member Boyle. "If MAGA Republicans cause yet another government shutdown, the American people will know exactly who is responsible. Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans have reneged on the bipartisan budget agreement they themselves negotiated and are driving our nation towards a shutdown in a desperate attempt to impose their extreme agenda on American families. It's time for them to end this hostage scheme and stop using American families as pawns in their political games."

With Trump's backing, MAGA Republicans are openly clamoring for a government shutdown and callously ignoring the consequences American families will suffer:

Donald Trump: "UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN!"

Rep. Ralph Norman: "... If the government shuts down, let's shut it down."

Rep. Bob Good: "We shouldn't fear a government shutdown."

Rep. Bob Good: "... Most Americans won't even miss it."

Rep. Byron Donalds: "I'm not afraid of shutdowns."

Rep. Chip Roy: "Swamp dwellers hand-wringing over a possible shutdown"

Far-right Republicans have taken control of the House Republican conference, and they're using shutdown threats to push their extreme agenda at the expense of American families.

Rep. Matt Gaetz: "... It's Kevin McCarthy's fault that the government is going to shut down. We cannot blame the Democrats for having not done our job..."

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene: "I will not vote to fund the government unless we have passed an impeachment inquiry on Biden."

Rep. Chip Roy: "I'm tired of all these Republicans hiding behind, 'Oh, but they'll say it's a shutdown.' That is all bullshit. The truth is we're using the power that we were given to force change because you don't pay people not to do their job."

Rep. Eli Crane: "Nothing happens in this town without force."
