ICYMI: Budget Democrats Call Out Republican Plans to Cut Social Security and Medicare Benefits

June 13, 2024

New Fact Sheets Contrast Republican Study Committee Budget with President Biden’s 2025 Budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, at a hearing with the Chief Actuaries for Social Security and Medicare, Ranking Member Brendan F. Boyle and House Budget Committee Democrats laid out the devastating impact of the 2025 Republican Study Committee (RSC) budget. Following the hearing, Budget Committee Democrats released two new fact sheets detailing how the RSC budget will cut Social Security benefits and end Medicare as we know it – in stark contrast to Democratic proposals to defend these hard-earned benefits.

“Their proposal, and I give them credit for honesty, because they put this out and put it in black and white, their plan cuts Social Security benefits for 257 million people. That's three out of every four Americans,” said Ranking Member Boyle in his opening statement.

The Social Security fact sheetexposes how the RSC would raise the retirement age to 69, cutting Social Security benefits for millions of Americans, and further reduce benefits by changing the calculations for retirement and disability benefits. This builds upon previous analysis from Budget Committee Democrats showing the impact of the RSC’s Social Security cutsin every congressional district.

“I believe deeply in Social Security and Medicare and what they represent, even beyond the paychecks. What they say to the American people is that we have a basic commitment to all of those who are in our society that we are going to take care of you when you most need it,” continued Ranking Member Boyle.

The Medicare fact sheet details how the RSC budget would end Medicare as we know it by replacing it with inadequate vouchers and destroy the Affordable Care Act, all while gutting Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
