Statement from House Budget Committee Ranking Member Brendan F. Boyle
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the impending Republican-caused government shutdown:
"For a decade, I have been fighting to permanently resolve the debt ceiling issue. That is why I introduced the Debt Ceiling Reform Act, a bill co-sponsored by over 50 House members that would end the weaponization of the debt ceiling once and for all. I am willing to work with anyone to achieve this goal.
We have at least six months to resolve the debt ceiling. But we only have hours to prevent a government shutdown. Republicans need to honor the agreement they negotiated and stop manufacturing crises that harm hardworking Americans.
It’s worth noting that Donald Trump’s recent call to raise the debt ceiling is not a principled shift—it’s purely because it is politically convenient for him right now. Republicans’ sudden embrace of this position after years of weaponizing the debt ceiling highlights their hypocrisy and disregard for consistent governance.
The immediate priority must be preventing a government shutdown and ensuring critical services for seniors, veterans, and working families continue uninterrupted. Sadly, House Republicans seem more interested in taking orders from billionaires like Elon Musk than in governing responsibly."
