Yarmuth Responds to Speaker Ryan’s Tax Policy Speech

Jun 20, 2017

Washington, D.C.—Today Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement in response to Speaker Ryan’s “major” speech on tax policy:

“In his major speech on tax policy today, Speaker Ryan failed to be straight with the American people about what Republican tax plans would actually do. He did not tell them that under their plan, an individual in the top one-tenth-of-one-percent of income gets a $1.4 million tax cut, while a middle income household receives barely $60. He didn’t mention that they are trying to take health care away from 23 million people, so that they can give $1 trillion in tax cuts primarily to the wealthy and corporations.  And he conveniently left out that their plan would grow the debt by $3 trillion. It’s clear that Speaker Ryan’s main goal is not to reform our broken tax system or help American families get ahead, but to give massive tax cuts to millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations.”
