Boyle Statement on House Republicans’ Vote to Default On America

Apr 26, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan F. Boyle, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released a statement following House Republicans’ party-line passage of the Default on America Act, their harmful spending cuts and default bill:

“Republicans claim they are being ‘fiscally responsible,’ but there never has been – and never will be – anything fiscally responsible about refusing to pay America's bills," said Ranking Member Boyle. "Killing jobs is not fiscally responsible. Neither is knowingly unleashing a recession, limiting our nation’s potential, or undermining Americans’ health, safety, and well-being. But that is exactly what Republicans are doing with their Default on America Act.

“The threat of default is looming, American jobs and livelihoods are on the line, but instead of decisive action and responsible leadership, House Republicans are doubling down on their reckless brinkmanship and hostage-taking. House Republicans are so desperate to inflict cruel cuts on working families and make it easier for the rich and big corporations to cheat on their taxes, they are willing to force our nation to default for the first time in history.

“Republicans’ cuts will increase the likelihood of a recession and result in almost 800,000 fewer jobs by the end of 2024. How does that help Americans? How does defunding local law enforcement and border protection agencies help keep our communities safe? How does ripping away access to child care help parents get back to work? How does kneecapping our economic growth help us outcompete China? It doesn’t. The Default on America Act does nothing to solve the real challenges facing America because House Republicans do not care about the kitchen table issues facing Americans.”
