Chairman Yarmuth on Russell Vought’s Confirmation as Director of OMB

Jul 20, 2020

Washington, D.C.— Today, Kentucky Representative John Yarmuth, Chairman of the House Budget Committee, issued a statement following the Senate confirmation of Russell Vought as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB):

“When Mr. Vought appeared before the House Budget Committee last February, I called on him to assure the committee that, under his leadership, OMB would be transparent in how it manages the people’s money and would respect the rule of law and Congress’ proper role. Now, when American lives and livelihoods depend on the effectiveness of the federal government and the proper implementation of fiscal policy, it is critical that Director Vought honor his commitments. I will honor my promise to hold him to his word.”

Last month, Chairman Yarmuth sent letters to OMB seeking Mr. Vought’s commitment to comply with GAO inquiries and refrain from unlawful impoundments. The House Budget Committee is still awaiting response. In April, Chairman Yarmuth introduced the Congressional Power of the Purse Act to both increase executive transparency and add teeth to the Impoundment Control Act.
