Yarmuth Statement on Medicare and Social Security Trustees Reports

Jun 5, 2018

Washington, D.C. – Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the release of the 2018 reports from the trustees for Medicare and Social Security:

“Medicare and Social Security are vital pillars of Americans’ retirement security. As today’s Trustees reports confirm, while the programs remain on solid footing right now, the country’s aging population will necessitate responsible and comprehensive reforms—including additional resources—to ensure we can keep our promises to our seniors in the decades ahead.  And yet, Republicans enacted deficit-busting tax cuts for the wealthy that make it harder to meet these obligations and have already helped shorten the life of the Medicare Trust Fund by three years. Instead of targeting these vital funds to pay for their millionaire tax breaks, Republicans should work with Democrats on commonsense plans to ensure a secure retirement for all Americans.”
